Boom Boom Boom
Another scintillating week enjoying the pleasures of Dakhla. Whichever way we turned something was happening, coffee mornings, kiting days, team GB vs team Deutschland at the bar, a fleeting visit from Deadpool (obviously a planned promo for the next film) and the odd cheeky present from the kittens – it just didn’t stop. Peanuts and popcorn flowed, share prices in the Casablanca brewery soared and Paul swears he saw Girls Aloud at the club!

What a week! Like a slow roast, started gently, built progressively and ended with the most mighty of horseradish finishes, woooowh. So much effort, enthusiasm and motivation on the water from everybody. Style, go for it and another 101 ways to fall – that’s kiting;) Add Dolphins, a lot of peanuts, the awesome daily grilled fish, a multi cultural group and the delights of Dakhla Attitude and the week ties up to be a phenomenal one

And what would the waves be without turns. Plenty of variants to learn, and lots of technique to polish – we can all agree that everyone loves throwing buckets:)

Don’t Forget The Twin Tip
Just because there are waves doesn’t mean you have to leave the twinny at home. Stunt ramps, flats between the waves, burms to carve off, white water to clear. 1 – it’s an awesome way to get comfy and build confidence in the waves. 2 – it makes a great change from simply strapless. 3 – there’s so much to do from pops, jumps, air gybes, grabs, rotations, kite loops and even a cheeky back to blind….

Need we say more – the pure joy and fear of hitting a lump and intentionally launching with no straps to “hinder” the experience…. Addictive skills!

What do you need for a few good weeks of coaching?

Well 3 groups of willing, motivated and up for it folk. Obviously equipped with the necessary head gear:)

The planets to align and mother nature to deliver. Golly gosh didn’t she just. 3 weeks of pumping wind and endless waves rolling in over the reef.

And some confidence to find your feet in the conditions, share the playground, get in the air, soak up some foam, get out back and drop down some faces before the work can really begin……..

A truly bonkers week of non stop fun, regardless which way you look at it. South Africa is always special, you name it from the hospitality, the food and wine, the space, colours, wildlife and it’s really at a time of year that shouts “escape” to the sun. A big thanks again to John for having the perfect spot and Kathy for, well being Kathy:) And a group hug for getting away incident less after the fleeting visit of the stray Octopus. On the water action was constantly entertaining, we had Marije going big and some cheeky toe side, must be the strompwaffles. Miguelito was kite looping like a legend and some of those raleys were sublime – not to mention your food marathon, and will anyone forget Pennywise. Kiwi Steve, everyone’s favourite rocket scientist was either going huge or styling out countless moves – both sides with a quick cameo as Nacho Libre. Tanja definitely regained her confidence after a forced sabbatical, finding some good air and rekindling her love of rotations, big back loops. New additions to the team, sisters Lena & Christa, took to the skies, popped to toeside, rolled and even flopped into dark slides, whilst mistaking confusing sea life:) Pablo, OK Tobi, survived Tom’s driving but was slightly beaten by over exuberance – loads of tacks and those hanging large air gybes…!!! Per made it his mission to be one of the highest and certainly was – quite a view from down here on planet earth. Tom, although escaping the photo sessions was on fire, those back loop kite loop hand washes were pure gold and the download air gybes will go down in the annals of history. And Janine, going backwards with style, very blind and what about those surfboard tacks – lovely. As for the evening entertainments we can only smile at the memories of laughter and everyone must be applauded for a mighty fine fancy dress turn out, the big 5 indeed, dancing and all…….

Obviously it was no surprise that the wind continued non stop for clinic 2. The beauty of up north:) Another veritable gang of energy and positivity. Like the wind we continued with laughs, food, beverages and kiting aplomb. And as a spectacle towards the end, we even witnessed the carnage which is fearless children racing for a chance in the junior Olympics! This was of course only outdone by 2 BBQs at the beach. We’ve never seen rain in BG, but as is the way with summer entertaining, the BBQ brought a splattering of drops – hence the chance for a second one – such a shame;) As always some fine performances on the water (those off the water need no mention). Fredgie found the waves and mimicked his legend Robbie Naish. Pizza was slamming the moves out, passing like a demon and found someone who could actually pronounce his name. Lotte’s boner and blind combo were outstanding, and as for the tacks. Magnus wouldn’t be outdone, some great strapless carving and tacking, hefty airs and was spotted out on the water bare chested – easy now tiger. Luisito nailed the dark slide with his usual style and was forever bouncing off stunt ramps on his strapless twin tip:) Sean’s love of the open ocean was finally challenged as his strapless air gybe’s snuck ever closer. Luciano, our cultural attache for all things Brazilian nailed the tack, got some strapless airs and even found time for some twin tip air gybes. Clare was most solidly in the chair of air, hanging around and even changing direction. Danielle was also heavily involved with air traffic control, as well as some delicious toe side and wave playing. Kirk, well Kirk is just another word for BIG AIR. Some gorgeous height, noteworthy boners, and the front roll… Big Ian, controlled style with some large airs and oodles of hang time, rotations and those top turns the waves. And last but not least Victoria certainly got on with her new Switchblade, sending it for some tasty jumps as well as carving the strapless machine. All the while Heliarde was on hand to inspire, smile and save:)

Brazil the 1st – What a jolly fortnight. A quick mention must go to the unfortunate cocktail of poor weather and somewhat ambitious flight planning, resulting in pink dolphins and extra sightseeing for some, before the games and caipis commenced in earnest. The ultimate melange of boys and girls keeping things honest on the water and chivalrous off it. Plenty of twin tip showing off, but also a hefty dose of surfboards with more strapless action than a night at the Oscars. Fun road trips, down-winders, Manatees, oodles of progress, great food, plenty of refreshments, and fortunately a few Drs present due to a bad case tack-itis. The wonderful help of Heliarde. The beautiful new Switchblade and Drifter deserve a mention too. Really too much to go through, but a fantastic turn out for fancy dress, Sian’s face paint, those jumps and strapless ease in the waves, Social Secretary Henry present and correct (thankyou for always being there so no one ever has a tipple alone), legendary blind and the hat tip air gybe:), Louise getting the grab shot with a year to spare, John for keeping Heliarde busy – but the down-loops were worth it, Alan’s textbook tack (and those top turns), Simone’s tacks and those sharp links, Hot Sauce’s air and speed runs, Andre’s great airs and gybe’s and unrelenting bonhomie, Adi’s toeside and love of flat water, Roger’s blossoming into a fully fledged member of the Edgau club, Matt’s admirable ever fearless approach to both the twin tip and strapless, Mr Wilsons cheeky tacks and lagoon clearing partnerships (hope you mend well and asap). We enjoyed every minute of madness….

An exciting time of year for kiters at the moment, what with new kit springing up everywhere, the presence of too many temptations to drop a wad of cash and the challenge of finding somewhere else to hide your shiny new toys. Hopefully we can add to this sport induced frenzy with a few new challenges, that will of course be so much easier on that new kite;) Kicking August off we have an old school wakestyle move, hooked in to keep it more achievable too. It’s the Hoochie Glide, a back scratcher of a Raley with a sneaky front hand grab. Then, as you can never have enough ways to change direction, we have another tantalising transition for you in the shape of the Toeside Back Roll Downloop Transition. And to finish things off we have possibly the tastiest of grabs to add to your sent back rotations, the ultimate in embellishments, the Back Roll Stalefish. Party on dudes…..
