Soma Bay, Egypt 16th–23rd Sept

Flat Water Heaven!

Last September we had our maiden voyage to the new Breakers Hotel, whilst kiting from the 7 Beaufort Kitehouse. We’d been looking for somewhere fresh in Egypt and the trip didn’t disappoint. A great hotel with good food, good service and a perfect flat water spot, Egypt’s answer to Coche! And flight times mean that you get 7 days on the water!

The Spot

Soma Bay has a reputation in Egypt of having a very localised wind acceleration phenomenon. Which means that it gets more wind than its neighbouring spots of Hurghada and Safaga. If there is wind around, it’ll be in Soma Bay for sure. The water is that beautiful Egyptian turquoise, and with the wind blowing cross offshore, it’s pretty darned flat. Just perfect for nailing moves. The beach is rock and reef free, with a very shallow sandy section before the water drops off to a safe depth. What is great here compared with many spots in Egypt is that the kiting area doesn’t reduce in size when the tide goes out.

The centre has a very efficient rescue service, so not only is the spot perfect for learning but it’s very safe too. The clubhouse lies along the upwind edge of the beach and has all the necessary amenities like storage, beach service, restaurant, shop, sun loungers, showers and toilettes.

Kit wise you can leave the wave board at home unless you fancy some strapless freestyle. However it is worth bringing the rest. Egypt weather runs by its own laws, it can blow 7m weather for a week or you can change kites daily, learning calmly on your 12 or 14 one day and hanging onto a small kite the next. You don’t need wetsuits, but if you are prone to the cold throw a shorty into your bag for good measure.

The Hotel

The 4 star Breakers Hotel, which opened last March, is set on the small peninsula of Soma Bay with views over the sea and golf course. It’s a 5 minute shuttle ride to the club in the morning. The hotel is well equipped and modern with everything you’ll need, good working and cold air-con, flat screen tvs, internet, gym, diving centre and a couple of bars. Accommodation is half board, the breakfast is tasty, varied and plentiful, as is diner, so no need for long waits and sugar lows when you require some refuelling. And there is a brilliant reef in front if you fancy getting those flippers on!

The Clinic

Clinic wise, you’ll have 6 full on days of coaching. Due to the spot anything is possible from toeside to handle passes and jumps to kite loops. From where we coach on the beach it is really easy for us to grab you, give you some pointers or a demo and even put your kite down so you can have a rest. As always we’ll be pushing you towards your individual goals, whilst maintaining that fun and motivating group spirit, using the trusted simulator, on and off water demos, plenty of on water coaching and the omni present video.

Cost

The cost for 7 days on the water, 6 days coaching, flights, transfers and half board accommodation is £999. The only extras are €50 for rescue and storage to be paid locally, and your kit on the plane.
